  1. Coffee & Pastry with the Author - Slavery and Class in the American South: A Generation of Slave Narrative Testimony, 1840-1865

    February 12, 2020, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM @ Seymour Center

Have a cup of coffee with author, William “Bill” Andrews, as he explains how social status and class developed among the enslaved in the first half of the nineteenth century. These distinctions played key roles in the lives and liberation of celebrated fugitives like Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs. Andrews explains how social class cut two ways - separating upper and lower strata of slaves to their enslavers’ advantage, but at other times convincing privileged slaves that they deserved complete freedom. There will be an opportunity to purchase the book and have it autographed. Min: 5/Max: 25. Author/Presenter: Bill Andrews, E Maynard Adams Professor of English Emeritus, UNC-Chapel Hill
