Emeritus of American History.

Adriane Lentz-Smith, PhD, is the author of Freedom Struggles: African Americans in World War I . She is working on another book temporarily entitled, Afterlives: Sagon Penn, State Violence and the Twilight of the Civil Rights Movement.

We could not deliver a single meal without the help of our volunteers. Our goal is to attract, train and engage our volunteers, utilizing their diverse skills to best serve the needs of our recipients, as well as our organization. We look forward to you joining our large corps of dedicated volunteers who lend their time and talents to help deliver hot meals to older adults, homebound adults, adults with disabilities, and those convalescing, who do not have access to or the ability to prepare a healthy meal. Looking for a new hobby?  Want to meet new friends? Try Latin Dancing! Spend the evening enjoying some great music and learning dance steps that you can use everywhere.  Classes are open to individuals and couples.  No partner?  No problem!  We will switch partners throughout the class, so everyone gets a chance to dance. Professional instructors will teach a variety of dances. No prior dance experience is needed.  Leather/smooth-soled shoes are recommended – no flip flops.

NAMI Family to Family

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Family to Family is a free, 11-week evidenced-based program for caregivers of people with mental health conditions.  The program provides information and strategies for taking care of the person you love, but you'll also find out that you're not alone. You'll learn about:

  • How to solve problems and communicate effectively
  • Taking care of yourself and managing your stress
  • Supporting your loved one with compassion
  • Finding and using local supports and services
  • Up-to-date information on mental health conditions and how they affect the brain
  • How to handle a crisis
  • Current treatments and therapies
  • The impact of mental health conditions on the entire family

Help prepare and serve lunch from 11:30 - 1:00 pm at the Seymour Center. Interested? Please call Isabel Jackson, 919-245-4256. 


The Senior Lunch Program offers hot, nutritious meals at the Orange County Senior Centers each Monday through Friday at noon. Meals are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Orange County residents 60 years and older are invited to participate. For people under age 60, a meal costs $6. Voluntary and confidential donations for lunch are a very important part of the Program's budget which includes funding from the Older Americans Act, Orange County Government, and the Towns of Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and Hillsborough.

Are you turning 65, and eligible for Medicare?  Do you feel overwhelmed by all the information “bombarding” you?  The Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) and the Orange County Department on Aging offer monthly sessions to learn about Medicare - and all its parts.  Whether you are retiring soon, already retired or continuing to work, you’ll get valuable information including how and when to enroll, potential penalties for late enrollment, as well as Medicare’s costs, benefits and options.

Tax Assistance


The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) is sponsored by the IRS and provides free tax assistance for eligible low and moderate income taxpayers of any age.  We have over 70 volunteers and complete over 1,500 tax returns from February-April each year. 

Tax help is provided at both the Seymour Center and the Passmore Center.  Volunteers assist in a variety of roles including office assistance, receptionist, computer support as well as tax preparers. Orientation Sessions for new volunteers will start in October.
