FRAUD ALERT -  Genetic Testing and Cancer Screenings

Medicare covers genetic tests and cancer screenings that are medically necessary AND ordered by your doctor.  If you visit a community health fair and are offered these tests ‘at no cost to you’, you should not provide your Medicare number or Social Security number.  If they have your Medicare number, the company may bill Medicare.  Medicare will deny payment and you will be billed for the service.  If you are interested in the tests, you should discuss them with your doctor.  Call 1-800 MEDICARE if you think you’re a victim of Medicare fraud.

Care Partner Collaborative

Join us as we come together weekly to co-create a space that welcomes and supports people experiencing early-stage memory loss. In a warm and relaxed setting, we’ll share conversation, have lunch, and enjoy music, movement and other activities of our own design.

This gathering, Wednesdays at the Seymour Center from 10:00 to 2:00, is part of a collaborative project that relies on the input of care partners, who are invited and expected to participate on a limited basis. Through their involvement in various aspects of the collaborative, care partners gain connection, community, comfort and confidence for their journey ahead.

Participation is free and registration is required. Please contact Lisa Meinert at or 919-245-4251 to discuss eligibility details and whether this is a good fit for you and the person you are caring for.

International Conflicts and Approaches: Asia and the Middle East

While the world’s attention has recently been focused on trade wars, conflicts in the Middle East, Brexit, and the nuclear nonproliferation issues, the plight and predicament of minorities in many parts of the world go unnoticed and unattended. Although festering for a long time, the political and humanitarian situations of the Uyghurs in China and the Rohingyas in Myanmar have of late become cruel and indefensible crises of varying degrees.  In this discussion I will attempt to highlight the main points of these conflicts and what may be some nonviolent international responses to resolve them. Medicare Assistance

Medicare Tip of the Month:
Annual Wellness Visit vs Annual Physical Exam

Original Medicare covers an Annual Wellness Visit which is primarily a discussion with your physician about your health needs and wellness screening tests that are beneficial for your situation.  It does NOT cover a typical Annual Physical which will include a comprehensive physical examination.  When making an appointment, be sure to use the right words to avoid being charged for your visit - ask for an Annual Wellness Visit.
If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you may be covered for the more extensive Annual Physical.  You'll need to check your benefit booklet or call your insurance company to check.
