These items are not permitted/banned from Orange County Landfill disposal.

Municipal Solid Waste: No mixed garbage or putrescible wastes from residents or non-residential entities.

Hazardous Waste: Residents, and businesses that generate small quantities (less than 220 pounds per month) of hazardous waste can bring it to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection. Appointments needed for loads greater than 25 pounds. Call 919-968-2788.

Aluminum Cans and Plastic Bottles: The State of North Carolina bans aluminum cans and plastic drink bottles from landfill disposal; recycle them instead.

Asbestos: Asbestos is not allowed in the Orange County Landfill. Contact Republic Services, Durham 919-991-1000 or DH Griffin, Raleigh 919-834-7169.

Automotive Fluids: Antifreeze, motor oil and used oil filters, as well as kerosene, transmission fluid, gear oil, diesel fuel, and heating oil (each in a separate container, no other automotive chemicals) can be brought to Orange County Waste and Recycling Centers by residents. Residents and businesses that produce less that 220 pounds of hazardous waste per month can also bring them to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility.

Barrels or Drums are not permitted in the Orange County Landfill unless both ends have been removed.

Chromated Copper Arsenic or Creosote Treated Wood: Not permitted if received separately from the waste stream.

Clean Wood and Pallets: Clean wood is banned from the Orange County Landfill and must be separated to be recycled. Pallets, scrap dimensional lumber (2 by 4 type), mill ends, oriented strand board (OSB), plywood, or wood used in concrete forms with less than 2 inch diameter residual chunks of plaster/concrete attached. Clean wood can contain nails, bolts and screws in reasonable amounts. No cross-ties, landscaping timbers, masonite, painted or stained wood, telephone poles, treated wood, wood with tar or roofing materials on it can be recycled with clean wood.

Corrugated Cardboard: Cardboard dumpsters are available at 24-hour recycling drop-off sites for businesses that generate 50 boxes or less per week. Those with more than fifty boxes a week may use the Orange County Landfill or hire a private service. Boxes must be clean and dry, flattened, and all packing material removed. No wax-coated boxes. Pizza boxes should be recycled with commingled recycling.

Electronics: Televisions and computers are banned from North Carolina Landfills. Non-residential entities (businesses, non-profits, faith-based organizations) can recycle "data carrying" electronics such as computers and peripherals, televisions, radios, fax machines, printers, and telephones. We also accept compact discs and plastic jewel cases. Businesses can bring electronics to the Orange County Landfill at no cost during normal hours of landfill operation. Residents can recycle electronics at any of the five Solid Waste and Recycling Centers. No electronic media containing tape such as audio cassette tapes, video cassette tapes, or shrink wrap.

Lead pipes, bulbs, lighting ballast or fixtures, thermostats and light switches, transformers, and capacitors: are not permitted if received separately from the waste stream. Mercury containing items such as thermostats, fluorescent lights and ballasts can be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility.

Oyster Shells: The State of North Carolina bans oyster shells from landfill disposal. This ban is targeted to commercial establishments. There is a collection location at the Orange County Landfill.

Scrap Metal: including but not limited to cast iron tubs, aluminum gutters and siding, bedsprings, metal pipe, steel studs, tin roofing and other items containing significant amounts of metal. Must be recycled.

Tires: Up to 5 tires of all sizes are allowed per visit at no charge.

Large Appliances (White Goods): Refrigerators, stoves, water heaters, washers, dryers, etc. are collected for recycling in a separate area.

Vegetative (Yard) Waste: Vegetative waste is brush, grass, leaves, logs (no larger than 12 inch diameter or 10 feet long). No plastic bags, trash, garbage, dirt, rocks or stumps. Yard waste may be delivered in paper yard waste bags specifically designed for this purpose available at home improvement stores.

Liquid, Radioactive, Polychlorinate Biphenyls (PCBs) or Medical Wastes are not permitted.
